Software Engineer Internship

Dick's Sporting Goods - Innovation Team

For the summer of 2023 I had the privilege of working for Dick's Sporting Goods as a software engineering intern on the Innovation team. University teaches you a lot on Computer Science, but the first months at this company have developed my skills immensely. We used the Agile development process, talking through the upcoming stories on our Jira board at daily stand up before pairing up and finishing our assigned tickets. Specifically, I've worked on applications like bat genie and cleat wizard. These are cutting edge apps that live on a kiosk in a Dick's Sporting Goods store that customers can use to get bats and cleats recommended to them. The apps use machine learning and high speed cameras to track the movement of the customer for the experience.

I've learned Spring, Spring-boot, OpenAPI, RESTFul, MyBatis, and Kapt for back end logic related to setting up API endpoints through the delegate pattern as well as performing operations on a postgressql database.

Not only this, but I've now been exposed to Postman, Azure App Services and PCF for deployment, and Github Actions to automatically build and deploy after pushing.

Finally, I took part in the internal Dick's Sporting Goods hackathon with a team of 5 other interns. The challenge prompt was centered around ChatGpt's API, and after writing lots of code, we pushed out a backpack recommending AI chat bot. The pitch video for Backpack Expert (with Zippy!) is to the left.
